| 520 | 3 |a"We briefly describe stock assessment for fisheries on charrs (Salvelinus spp) with reference to the considerations in the Central and Arctic Region of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. For reference, we provide simple descriptions of the purpose of stock assessment and fisheries management. For stock assessments, general considerations are that stock assessments must be quantitative, recognize that stocks are dynamic in time and account for uncertainty due to natural processes, measurement error and model error. We discuss model complexity and the importance of cross-comparison in stock assessment to reduce uncertainty in conclusions. Considerations for stock assessment in the Central and Arctic Region are discussed including the unique nature of Arctic fisheries, the biology of the species harvested and the pros and cons of sampling techniques and models for Arctic assessments. We present short descriptions of key fisheries to indicate when advice will be provided and to whom, the stock assessment model that is currently contemplated to be used in the provision of the advice, a description of the parameter(s) that we hope to estimate, the assessment program - i.e. plant sampling, annual collections of catch and effort, mark/recapture, aerial surveys etc., a description of the preferred stock assessment model (if the current model is considered less than ideal) and why it is preferred and the research needed to implement the preferred model"--Abstract, page v. |
