Size, distribution and significance of the commercial by-catch of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) in mainland Nova Scotia / R.W. Gray, D.L. Morantz and J.D. Cameron. : Fs97-4/1583E-PDF

"The average annual by-catch of Atlantic salmon in mainland Nova Scotia is estimated to range between 15,203 kg and 48,000 kg, depending on the data source utilized. About 73% of this by-catch is taken at five locations — Herring Cove-Pennant, St. Margaret's Bay-Mahone Bay, Morden-Hall's Harbour, Little Harbour and Ecum Secum. Multi-species commercial fish traps are responsible for 55.6% of the mainland by-catch, while herring weirs, surface gill nets and groundfish gill nets account for 20.0%, 14.2% and 9.4%, respectively. The distribution and impact of specific non-salmon gear on Atlantic salmon in each salmon management zone is described. By-catch consists mainly of Nova Scotia salmon stocks; however, a small proportion, roughly 10%, is of Saint John River origin. Results of the 1978 St. Margaret's Bay by-catch study are presented"--Abstract, page ix.
