The gillnet share of the landings has declined for all species of Pacific salmon except chum. The decline has been largest for sockeye salmon, and secondly for pink salmon. In 1982, gillnetters accounted for 37% of coastwide chum salmon landings, but only 8% of coho salmon landings. By 1982, purse seiners accounted for the largest share of the landings of pink and sockeye salmon. The purse seine share of Pacific salmon landings has increased most rapidly for sockeye salmon from less than 15% prior to 1953 to an average of 49% during 1978-1982. The troll-caught share of salmon landings has increased for all species, with the largest increases recorded in coho and chinook salmon landings. Trollers accounted for 79% of the coho and chinook salmon landed in 1982"--Abstract, page iii. |
