520 |a"Many hatcheries have been built in British Columbia as part of the Salmonid Enhancement Program (SEP). With the increased hatchery production, concerns were expressed about possible effects of hatchery effluents on the aquatic environments of those streams into which the effluents were discharged. The ability of conventional wastewater treatment technologies to adequately treat hatchery effluents also was of concern. In response to these issues, a study was made of the chemical characteristics of hatchery effluents from selected B.C. hatcheries (Underwood McLellan Ltd. 1979a). A second study assessed the effectiveness of effluent treatment methods (Underwood McLellan Ltd. 1979b). In this report, we present the results of a study on the environmental effects of hatchery effluent discharges on several B.C. streams. … The present study examined a number of B.C. coastal streams which receive hatchery effluents and several interior streams where hatcheries have been proposed. Water chemistry and the abundance and composition of the periphyton and benthic invertebrates were studied during spring fish rearing periods or throughout the year to assess the extent and seasonality of the effects of hatchery discharges on receiving waters. The relationships between hatchery operations and environmental changes in the streams also were examined to assess the appropriateness of provincial hatchery effluent guidelines for SEP salmon rearing facilities"--Introduction, page 1.
