5203 |a"The distribution and abundance of larval sablefish in the surface waters was examined during a neuston net survey from April 16 to May 10, 1984 off the west coast of Vancouver Island and in Queen Charlotte Sound. A total of 714 sablefish larvae were caught in night tows and 8 in day tows. They composed 19.4% of the total catch of larvae and occurred at 76.6% of the night stations. Sablefish larvae were predominantly caught along the west coast of Vancouver Island at stations positioned between the 200 and 2000 m depth contours. Most of the sablefish (38.7%) were caught off Nootka Sound. Abundance estimates of sablefish from single tow samples collected throughout the survey area ranged from 3.2-586.3 larvae/1000 m³. Sablefish ranged in length from 8-38 mm with a mean length of 16.6 mm. Ninety-four percent ranged in length from 11-26 mm. Other larval species caught during this survey are also discussed in this report"--Abstract, page iii.
