1986 research catch and effort data on nearshore reef-fishes in British Columbia Statistical Areas 12, 13 and 16 / L.J. Richards and A.J. Cass. : Fs97-4/1903E-PDF

"In 1984 we began a research program based on the need for stock assessments of nearshore reef-fishes in the Strait of Georgia. The 1986 results from minor statistical areas (MSA) 12, 13 and 16 are presented in this report, and are compared with the 1984 and 1985 results from MSA 16, and with a small sample from the sport fishery in MSA 12 and 16. Research CPUE data were collected by angling with trolling rods and reels, using frozen herring as bait. Three depth intervals (5-40 m, 41-70 m, and 71-100 m) were fished at most of the sites. Depth did not affect CPUE in MSA 12, but CPUE in MSA 13 and 16 was greater over 5-40 m. In among-area comparisons at each depth interval, MSA 13 had the highest CPUE over 5-40 m and 71-100 m, and MSA 12 had the highest CPUE over 41-70 m. Quillback rockfish, copper rockfish and lingcod were the dominant species in the catch. Species composition varied with depth and statistical area. The greatest number of species were caught in MSA 12 and the fewest in MSA 13. Proportionately more quillback rockfish were sampled in the research catch than in the sport landings. Quillback rockfish, yelloweye rockfish, kelp greenling and lingcod caught in MSA 12 had a larger size than those caught in MSA 13 or 16. The largest copper rockfish were caught in MSA 13. Sizes of fish landed by the sport fishery tended to be larger than those caught during the research surveys. Smaller lingcod were caught during surveys in 1986 than in 1985"--Abstract, page iii.
