Decomposing the decline in life expectancy at birth by cause of death during the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada / by Ashraf Sirag, Mohan Kumar and Owen Phillips. : CS82-003/2026-10-1E-PDF
"Life expectancy at birth is defined as the average number of years an individual is expected to live from birth, assuming age-specific mortality conditions remain constant. Generally, life expectancy at birth has trended upward in Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development countries since the 1970s because of reductions in mortality arising from improvements in health care, disease prevention, and a variety of socioeconomic conditions. Additionally, global life expectancy has also increased significantly from 2000 to 2019, attributable to reductions in maternal and infant mortality. However, the COVID-19 pandemic reversed these trends across the globe in more recent years. Canada was no exception and experienced a decline in life expectancy at birth from 2019 to 2022, going from 82.30 years to 81.34 years"--Introduction, page 4.
