"On February 23, 2016, the Senate adopted an Order of Reference authorizing the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology (“the committee”) to examine and report on the issue of dementia in Canadian society. The committee held 14 meetings between March 9 and June 2, 2016 and heard from a broad range of experts whose testimony addressed the nature of dementia, the burden of the conditions both at a personal and societal level, prevention and treatment, caregiver issues, housing, research, as well as national strategies to improve the care available to patients. Over the course of the study, the committee heard from officials from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Public Health Agency of Canada as well as witnesses representing health professional organizations; dementia and mental health advocacy organizations; research programs; seniors’ residential housing groups; long-term care and palliative care associations; home care and caregiver groups; national dementia strategies; and, finally, the Assembly of First Nations"--Introduction, p.
