"The tables and charts presented in this report on Canadian tobacco are based on data compiled by the Agricultural, General Manufactures, and External Trade Branches of the Dominion Bureau of Statistics, and reports of the Department of National Revenue. In these data may be traced the gradual expansion of the industry from early settlement days when tobacco growing was discouraged to its present status as an important contributor to the national income. In 1939 the output of the Canadian tobacco manufacturing industry was valued at 90.6 million dollars, and the crop of raw leaf produced in that year returned to the growers 19.4 million dollars"--Introduction.
