  "When there is uncertainty about estimates of the margin of unused capacity in the economy, examining a range of inflation indicators may help in assessing the balance of risks regarding the outlook for inflation. This paper tests a wide range of observable variables for their leading-indicator properties with respect to core inflation, including: commodity prices, cost indicators, measures of capacity pressures in labour and product markets, and components of the consumer price index (CPI) itself. After a preliminary screening of indicators using Granger causality tests, estimated bivariate indicator models generate post-sample static forecasts one quarter ahead and two quarters ahead over the period 1995 (Q1). A ridge regression technique is used to optimally combine selected bivariate forecasts into multivariate forecasts. The root-mean-squared errors of both the bivariate and multivariate forecasts are compared with those of benchmark models -- a Phillips curve, an autoregressive model, and two naive models."--Abstract.

  "The recent strength of the U.S. economy and historically low rates of inflation have sparked considerable debate among economists and Federal Reserve officials. In order to better explain the recent behaviour of inflation, some observers have raised the concept of a non-accelerating inflation capacity utilization rate (NAICU). In this study, the author presents a new methodology to estimate the NAICO. A simple structural vector autoregression, including industrial production, the inflation rate, and the long-run real interest rate, is used to identify production capacity."--Abstract.

  "Options prices are being increasingly employed to extract market expectations and views about monetary policy. In this paper, eurodollar options are monitored to examine the evolution of market sentiment over the possible future values of eurodollar rates. Risk-neutral probability functions are employed to synopsize the information contained in the prices of euro/dollar futures options. Several common methods of estimating risk-neutral probability density functions are examined. A method based on a mixture of lognormals density is found to rank first and a method based on a Hermite polynomial approximation is found to rank second. Several standard summary statistics are also examined, namely volatility, skewness, and kurtosis. The volatility measure is fairly robust across methods, while the skewness and kurtosis measure are model-sensitive. As an example, the days surrounding the September 1998 Federal Open Market Committee are examined."--Abstract.

  "The chief objective of this study was to construct sexual maturity length and age curves for the mackerel population spawning in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The results were compared with the minimum legal catch length currently in force. A second, equally important objective was to detail the growth and certain biological characteristics of the mackerel sampled in the course of the study. St. Margarets Bay, Nova Scotia, was chosen as the sampling site not only because it has a significant fishery each year, but because of the presence in the catches of small mackerel that are not generally caught, or at least present in the regular commercial samples from the Gulf of St. Lawrence."--Pages 1-2.

Ainsi, dans le cadre du programme d'évaluation de la qualité des habitats marins du plan d'action Saint-Laurent Vision 2000, le ministère des Pêches et des Océans a implanté un réseau de suivi ichtyologique le long des côtes de l'estuaire du Saint-Laurent afin de caractériser l'évolution temporelle de la ressource ichtyenne en milieu côtière... Les résultats de la première phase du suivi ont été publiés par Bérubé et Lambert (1997). Le présent rapport intègre les nouvelles données des années 1996 et 1997 aux résultats de 1986-1995.
